Art Since the Summer of ’69 is, at 6 x 16”, the smallest gallery in the world.
Located on the Lower East Side in Manhattan, New York, our focus is young artists working in-between the realms of art, design, the Internet, music, and fashion.
Because of our size, artists are encouraged to create new projects that create new environments. In addition to solo projects, we have presented special projects of our own, such as The Bichon Frise in Art, based on an online museum of paintings throughout art history including the little dog, and Objects, Furniture and Patterns, involving artists from several generations (age 21 – 79) making furniture, who turned our space into an eccentric living room. Our inaugural exhibition As Small As It Gets was a play on the size of the gallery, including sculptures that were all less than 16 inches.
We have had solo projects by the Paris based jewelry designer Ligia Dias, who has previously collaborated with Comme des Garcons and Lanvin; Benjamin Valenza, who recently had a solo presentation at Palais de Tokyo; Lina Viste Gronli, an up-and-coming Norwegian artist who’s work range from a four inch wooden and stone sculpture to a 100 feet public sculpture of letters spelling out “Yoko Ono”; and Charles Irvin, a Los Angeles based artist with a very specific and humorous style, working in video, music and drawing.
We have also done collaborations with the boutique Ooga Booga, who is our sister space in Los Angeles, and almost as small as us.
The gallery was founded by Hanne Mugaas and is co-Directed by Fabienne Stephan.
Selection made by Hanne Mugaas.
